HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-This weekend, four members of Marshall's indoor track and field squad will head to Blacksburg, Virginia for the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier. The purpose of this weekend's competition is twofold: it is the last opportunity to secure a bid to the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas next weekend and it also allows student-athletes an opportunity to set and/or improve times/marks in the school's record book.
Jasia Richardson is currently tied for the 16th position in the triple jump and is looking to solidify her spot as one of the 16 athletes who will receive a bid.
Seniors Amber Pierson, Paige Govey and Crystal Walker will also join Richardson this weekend. The Herd has rewritten the school record book during this season with seven school records and will look to continue the trend in what could possibly be the seniors' last indoor competition.
The Herd will open competition Saturday at noon as Walker looks to set the stage in the long jump, followed by Richardson in the triple jump. Govey will participate in the mile at 12:45 p.m. and Pierson in the 400 meters at 2 p.m.
Marshall equaled its 2011 mark of 26.5 points last weekend at the Conference USA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. Richardson paced the Herd with a runner-up finish in the triple jump, closely followed by Walker's fifth-place finish. Pierson also garnered fifth-place honors in the 400 meters and was a participating member of the school record-setting 4x400m relay.
