Herd Races Outdoors at 49er Classic

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall track and field travels to Charlotte, N.C. to compete in the first meet of the outdoor season. The Thundering Herd will stretch its legs at the 49er Classic hosted by Charlotte at the Bell Track and Field Center on Friday and Saturday.

The Herd's field athletes will be the first ones to compete on Friday afternoon. Starting at noon Nicole Kyle (Keyser, W.Va.), Rachel Blankenship (Hurricane, W.Va.), LaTricia Jones (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Jessica Pissini (Hermitage, Pa.) will begin competition with the hammer throw. Participating in the long jump for the Herd will be Quinyanna Brown (Amherst, N.Y.) and Danyell Garner (Logan, W.Va.). Other events include the pole vault and discus.

The starter's gun will fire at 2 p.m. for the 100m hurdle prelims, the first of the track events. Karmen Collins (Sicklerville, N.J.) will be the lone runner in the event for the Herd.

During the remainder of the day, the 100m, 400m and 200m dash prelims will be held. Running for Marshall in the various events are Carmissa Morris (Greenville, S.C.), Xavier Richards (Kingston, Jamaica), Cathryn Morris (Erie, Pa.), Katina Morris (Erie, Pa.) and Zedmalia Wolfe (Toronto, Canada).

Running in distance events for the Herd during the meet are Emily Bailey (Kenova, W.Va.), Anna Chaney (Huntington, W.Va.), Marian Brooks (Flat Top, W.Va.), Stephanie Eastman (Spencer, W.Va.), Fabiola Gonzales (Huntington, W.Va.), Hannah Kovarik (Hurricane, W.Va.) and Sarah Sturgill (Hurricane, W.Va.). Friday's distance events include the 1500m and 5000m, while Saturday's are the 3000m and 800m.

Saturday's events will include the 200m, 400m and 100m hurdle finals as well as distance and relay events. Field events being held on Saturday include the shot put, triple jump, high jump and javelin. Herd newcomer Kwema Phillander (Siparia, Trinidad) will throw the javelin in her first event since joining Marshall.

Members of the men's cross country team will be participating in the 49er Classic as part of their non-traditional season.
