Compton Qualifies For National Championships at NCAA East Regionals

Erin Compton will get the chance to compete at the NCAA Championships after placing fifth at the East Regionals.

FAIRFAX, Va.--Marshall?s Erin Compton (Oak Hill, W.Va) added another accomplishment to her stellar senior season Saturday. Compton placed fifth in the discus at the inagural NCAA East Regionals at George Mason University, automatically advancing her to the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, California in two weeks. Her throw was also good enough to set yet another school record in the event.

Compton?s throw of 52.12 meters (170-feet-9 inches) was 1.12 meters better than Florida?s Dore Debartolo, the fifth best thrower in the region coming into the meet. She was only 3.02 meters behind regional champion Rachel Lonfors of Florida. Compton did not compete in the hammer throw event. She becomes the first Marshall athlete to advance to nationals under the new NCAA format.

Terry Stahl (Vienna, Va.) wrote the final chapter in the men?s team history Friday, as he was the last male to compete in a Marshall track uniform. Stahl fouled on each of his three attempts and did not place in the hammer throw event.

Compton will be one of 25 athletes going to Sacramento to compete in the discus event.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for June 11-14 on the campus of California State University.
