Herd Prepares for Season Opening Meet|
Dec. 6, 2012
FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Marshall University track and field team will open its 2012-13 season when it travels to the University of Findlay for this weekend’s Oiler Opener.
The two-day event will take place from Friday to Saturday at the Malcolm Athletic Center and will present the ladies of the Thundering Herd track and field team with a chance to set some early season marks. Last year, Vanessa Jules used the meet to set a new school record in the 300m dash and gain some early momentum for what turned out to be a very successful season.
The action will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday with the pentathlon and weight throw, before resuming Saturday morning with the high jump at 11 a.m. The long jump, triple jump, and shot put will follow in order thereafter to complete the schedule of field events.
Jules, who last season set the Herd’s pentathlon record at the Conference USA Indoor Championships, will be the Herd’s lone entry in the Oiler Opener’s pentathlon event as she starts the competition for Marshall on Friday. Newcomers Bethany Drury and Amanda Corriell will then step onto the field with junior Amanda Hottenstein to compete in the weight throw that same afternoon.
The running events will begin at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday with the 60m hurdles and continue through the course of the afternoon until the 4x400m relay concludes the women’s portion of the meet at 5:05. Jules, Alicia Daniels, and freshman Asia Bange will represent the Herd in the initial 60m hurdle event, while other athletes of interest include all-conference performer Jasia Richardson in the triple jump at 1:15 p.m., and exciting newcomers Shanice Johnson and Shyra Molton in the 60m dash prelims at 2:10.
