KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Marshall volleyball team fell to the Tennessee Volunteers Friday evening, 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 26-24) in the first match of the Rocky Top Classic.
“After a very lackluster two-set effort with what was probably our most experienced lineup, I went with the youth movement in set three, and I was very pleased with the excitement and effort put forth in that set,” head coach Mitch Jacobs said. “I hated to see it slip away after tying it at 24, but I do know I had a group out there excited for every point and playing hard. Tomorrow is a very important day for this group. I will be very excited if they can come right back and pick up in set one against Furman with the same effort and excitement to play this game.
Jac’cara Walker led Marshall with nine kills and Taylor Pelton added four. Madelyn Cole had 15 assists, 12 digs and one block. Freshman libero Jessa Long led Marshall in digs with 16. Tiffany Isaacs and Madison Hill had two blocks each.
The Thundering Herd was within four points in the first set until Tennessee went on a 6-0 run. A kill by Walker ended the run. The Volunteers scored the final three points to take the first set.
Tennessee (5-2) used a few small runs in the second set to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Marshall (3-10) came out strong in the third set taking a 9-4 lead before Tennessee took a timeout. The Vols then went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the set three. It remained a back-and-forth battle as the Herd kept it close. Marshall pulled it back to within one at 16-15, with a service ace by Jayden Jacobs. Tennessee did not lead by more than three throughout the rest of the third set.
The Herd tied the set at 20-20 off a Tennessee error, at 22-22 as Isaacs and Katie Jacques teamed up for a block and again at 24-24 on a kill by Walker. The Vols held off the surging Herd and scored two points in a row to come away with the sweep.
