Sept. 20, 2013
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Marshall volleyball was swept by No. 10 Michigan (25-20, 25-13, 25-17) and lost to No. 24 Ohio, 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 25-17 ) on Friday in the Michigan Invitational.
The Herd slipped to 5-9 on the season while the Wolverines improved to 8-1 and the Bobcats start the year 9-1.
“We are playing much better,” coach Mitch Jacobs remarked. “The more we’ve had time to play with a healthy lineup, the better we are getting.”
The Herd came out battling against No. 10 Michigan but dropped the first set 25-20. Marshall was unable to get any momentum in the following sets and lost the match 3-0. The Marshall squad was led offensively by freshman outside hitters Elyse Panick (Chicago) and Cassie Weaver (Huntington), who tallied seven kills apiece.
“This morning we played as hard as I’ve seen our group play and I applauded them for their effort,” said Jacobs.
Marshall looked primed for the major upset against No. 24 Ohio before a few costly errors cost the Herd the first set (25-19) and the second set (25-20). The Herd refused to go out without a fight and took the third set 25-20 after taking an early 9-6 lead. Marshall looked strong at the onset of the fourth set and the set was tied at 12. Then the Bobcats answered with a 13-4 run to take the set 25-17.
“This evening we were up and down with our effort, but I loved that we kept putting ourselves in a position to take sets from the No. 24 team in the nation,” Jacobs commented. “We are so close right now and I’m looking forward to taking one more step tomorrow.”
Freshman middle blocker Ally Kiekover (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the way for the Herd in the second match tallying 13 kills with a .500 hitting percentage while senior outside hitter Laura Der (Clarksville, Ind.) collected 10 kills and seven digs.
“As far as individual performances go, I thought our upper classmen played well this morning and our freshmen really stepped up tonight,” said Jacobs.
The Herd return to action on Saturday in the Michigan Invitational when they face Maryland at 2 p.m.
