HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – The Marshall volleyball team had four players with plus-ten kill counts in a five set battle against SMU that ended with the Herd recording a 3-2 (25-19, 17-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11) victory. The win records the first time Marshall has gone to five sets all season.

Marshall improves to 5-16 and 4-7 in Conference USA, while SMU drops to 9-14 and 5-6 in conference play.

The Herd had an explosive day on offense, tallying 64 combined kills and marking a season-best 12 service aces. Dorothy Rahal, Hannah Bailey and Ryanne Milligan each had three aces apiece, while Sammie Bane finished with two and Desirre Wilkerson had one.

Abby Tomas had a team-best 17 kills in the five set competition, while Wilkerson followed closely with 16. Wilkerson’s 16 kill performance is a new career-high in kills in a match for the sophomore. Sacha Byous-McConnell and Cameron Yoho both added 10 hammers each and Laura Der racked up eight kills.

Wilkerson was extremely efficient on both sides of the net during the match. She only had three errors to go along with her 16 kills, giving her a season-best .520 (16K, 3E, 25TA) hitting percentage. She also recorded six blocks (1 solo, 5 assists), which gives her a total of 71 blocks for the season.

Bane recorded her sixth double-double of the season with the win. The freshman setter combined for a career-high 56 assists and a game-high 20 digs to earn the accolade.

Defensively, Laura Der followed Bane’s team high 20 digs with 17 of her own, while Rahal had 16 and Milligan posted 15. Hannah Bailey combined for 11 digs.

In the first five-set match of the season for the Herd, it came down to the Marshall squad limiting unforced errors and shutting down the SMU offensive attack in the fifth game to rally for the win. The Herd scored six unanswered points in the latter part of the fifth set and a kill from Cameron Yoho at match-point sealed the win for Marshall.

“I was telling them all week long, SMU is not going to lose the game for themselves,” said Head Coach Jacobs after the match. “They are really good at not committing unforced errors. For them to have four errors in the 15 point set was huge for us.”

During the final set, Marshall held the Mustangs to a .120 hitting percentage (7 K, 4E, 25 TA) and Yoho, Tomas and Sacha Byous-McConnell each had three kills to help secure the victory.

The Herd looks to continue to drive forward in the conference with their next match against Southern Miss on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Marshall will follow with a match against Tulane on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
