HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – The Thundering Herd won three straight games after losing the first set against Southern Miss to finish with a 3-1 (28-30, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20) victory over the Golden Eagles.
Marshall had three players including Abby Tomas, Sacha Byous-McConnell and Cameron Yoho to tally plus-ten counts. Yoho (12 kills, 11 digs) and Sammie Bane (48 assists, 22 digs) both recorded double-doubles during the match to help push the Herd to the win.
Marshall improved to 6-16 (5-7 C-USA) with the victory and USM dropped to 11-13 (5-7 C-USA).
In the first set, it took a total of five different match points from a combination of both teams before the set was settled by a 30-28 win in Southern Miss’ favor. The Herd repeated a 25-20 result three straight times after losing the first set to rally back and record the victory. It is Marshall’s second straight win in a row and their third four-set win of the season.
“It was the best defense we have played all year,” exclaimed Head Coach Jacobs after the match. “When we started to show more patience and limit our unforced errors, things started to come together. I’m very proud of our young group to out-perform a team with all seniors and juniors on the floor.”
The Big Green defense recorded a season-high 17.0 (6 solo, 22 assists) block count to break past the Golden Eagles. Byous-McConnell tied her career-high in the game with a team-leading seven (2 solo, 5 assists) blocks, while Wilkerson added to her season total of 71 with six (6 assists) blocks. Laura Der tied her season-high and combined for six (2 solo, 4 assists) blocks during the game.
The Marshall defense also set a season-high mark during the match with 95 digs. Bane recorded a new career-high with a 22 count, while Ryanne Milligan
had 15 digs, Dorothy Rahal
finished with 14 and Der posted 13.
“Now we need to get ready for a good Tulane team on Sunday that wants to get us back after a really tight one in New Orleans,” said Jacobs.
