Marshall Volleyball Falls to No. 23 WKU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall volleyball’s two match win streak was snapped Friday night as the Herd fell to No. 23 WKU, 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-18).
Madison Hill led the Herd with eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Madelyn Cole had a team-best 15 assists and nine digs. Cassie Weaver tallied seven kills and seven digs. Kayla Simmons had 12 assists.
Marshall (17-7, 6-3 C-USA) opened the match by taking the first three points. A kill by Simmons and a block by Justice Craft and Hill gave Marshall a 6-4 lead. WKU (23-2, 10-0 C-USA) took six of the next eight points to take a 10-8 lead but a service error and a kill by Weaver tied the set at 10. The Lady Toppers took nine of the next 11 points to take a 19-12 lead over the Herd but Marshall took the next three points on a kill by Jac’cara Walker and a pair of WKU attack errors. The Herd attempted to make a late run at the end of the set but WKU held on to win the first set, 25-20.
WKU and Marshall both got off to slow starts in the second set, with neither team holding more than a two-point lead until the Lady Toppers took an 11-8 lead in the set. WKU took four of the next five points to extend its lead to 15-9. Kills by Cole and Hill cut into the WKU lead but the Lady Toppers had an answer to every Herd attack. WKU closed out the second set by taking ten of the final 13 points to win the second set, 25-13, and take a two set lead at the intermission.
Marshall jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the third set. WKU and the Herd traded points until the Lady Toppers took a 12-11 lead. Another kill by Weaver tied the set at 13 but WKU took five of the following seven points to increase its lead to 18-15. The Herd came within two points of WKU at 19-17 but the Lady Toppers took six of the last seven points to close out the match with a 25-18 third set win.
