BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Marshall volleyball took a 3-0 (29-27, 25-20, 25-14) loss to the No. 3 team in Conference USA, UAB, on Sunday afternoon in Bartow Arena.
Marshall dropped to 16-12 (6-8 C-USA) with the defeat, losing its seventh match in a row. UAB improved to 18-12 (10-4) and has won its past 10 of 11 matches.
Marshall struggled on offense, due to a strong blocking presence by UAB's front row. The Blazers earned 14.0 blocks in the match, compared to Marshall's 6.0.
The UAB defense limited the Herd offense to a .078 hitting percentage, giving Marshall its third lowest team attack percentage of the season.
"No more talking about what we need to do," reflected head coach Mitch Jacobs. "This team just needs to do it."
Middle blocker Sacha Byous-McConnell led the Herd with 13 kills and a .308 hitting percentage.
Outside hitter Laura Der followed with 12 kills and earned her 17th double-double of the season, adding 12 digs.
Sammie Bane also earned a double-double, posting 30 assists and accounting for 13 digs.
Freshman Jillian Shemanski led the Herd defense, recording a team-high four block solos. Outside hitter Katy Schad finished with a team-leading 13 digs, while libero Dorothy Rahal booked 12.
UAB was led by Kate Moreel with 13 kills and a .314 hitting percentage, while middle blocker Sam Serley, the leading blocker in C-USA, added nine blocks.
With the loss, Marshall now stands in eighth place in Conference USA. The Herd will look to hold on to the final seed with the final two matches of the regular season this coming weekend.
The Herd takes on Tulane on Friday at 4 p.m. ET and plays UTEP for "Senior Night" on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in the Cam Henderson Center.
