@HerdVolleyball Rallies for Five-Set Victory at North Texas
Walker and Weaver tied for a team-high 18 kills
DENTON, Texas – After falling behind 1-2 in the match, Marshall volleyball rallied to win the final two sets and beat North Texas 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 13-25, 25-21, 15-6) on Friday night.
Freshman Jac’cara Walker and senior Cassie Weaver paced the Thundering Herd (19-7, 8-3 C-USA) offensively with a team-high 18 kills each. Weaver posted her team-leading ninth double-double of the season as she added 14 digs in the match. Freshman Madelyn Cole also recorded a double-double with 50 assists and 13 digs. It was Cole’s seventh double-double of the season. Senior libero Allie Kellerman led the Herd with 17 digs and senior Ally Kiekover had six blocks.
The Herd jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first set of the match. The four-point advantage featured an ace by Kellerman and kills by Walker, Weaver and Shelby Conley. Marshall quickly improved its lead to seven at the 15-8 mark following a Walker kill. MU pushed its margin to double digits at 21-11 with another kill by Walker. North Texas (11-15, 5-6 C-USA) attempted to rally as it brought the frame within five, but the Herd’s advantage was too much, as the set finished, 25-19. Walker capped off the set with an impressive 10 kills.
Marshall began the second set strong by taking a 4-1 lead with kills by Conley and Kiekover. The Mean Green rallied and tied the set at six. After the tie, neither team gained an advantage of three points until the 14-11 edge in favor of North Texas. From there, the Mean Green never surrendered the lead and tied the match at one with a 25-21 set victory.
The third frame had the making for a close set in the beginning as it featured three tied scores. After the set was tied at nine, North Texas went on a seven point run to take a commanding 16-9 advantage. The lead was too much to overcome as Marshall fell, 25-13.
North Texas grabbed the first two points of the fourth set, but Marshall quickly responded and took a 5-3 margin after back-to-back kills by Weaver. After taking a 8-5 lead, North Texas rallied by taking the next four of five points to knot up the set at nine. Conley broke the tie with a kill to make it 10-9. Marshall never lost control of the lead from there and eventually led by seven at 19-12. NT brought the set within four at 23-19, but Marshall finished the set off with a Weaver kill and a block by Justice Craft and Conley.
Marshall gained momentum with the fourth set victory and it showed in the beginning of the fifth. The Thundering Herd opened the frame by taking the first five points. The Herd took an 8-2 lead at the switch following a kill by Weaver. MU stayed in control as it cruised to a 15-6 set win to clinch the comeback victory.
