EL PASO, Texas – The Marshall volleyball team lost in five sets at UTEP Wednesday night, 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-17). The Thundering Herd’s final match of the regular season is Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m., in the Cam Henderson Center against the UAB Blazers.
“Tough, tough loss,” Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. “UTEP is always a tough place to play. UTEP was extremely motivated and we just couldn’t break their confidence. Looks like Saturday is our first round C-USA match. Win and advance or lose and the season ends.”
Jac’cara Walker led the Herd with 20 kills. Addisyn Rowe added 13 kills and Madison Hill contributed 11. Madelyn Cole had 50 assists and Jessa Long led in digs with 18. Rowe had a .476 hitting percentage.
Marshall is now 10-18 and 5-8 in Conference USA play. UTEP improved to 6-22 and 3-11 in conference action.
Marshall dominated the first set winning 25-15. The Herd used a 7-0 run to build a commanding lead. Walker had five kills in the set. Marshall led 1-0.
UTEP took the lead in the second set at 8-7 and held it until the Herd tied the set at 20-20. The score was tied again at 21-21 and 22-22, until the Miners scored the final three points to tie the match at 1-1.
The Miners led from start to finish to take the third set and build a 2-1 lead. The Herd fought back in the fourth set and led from start to finish. The match was tied at 2-2 and moved on to the fifth and decisive set.
The fifth set was a back-and-forth battle as the score was tied 13 times and had three lead changes. UTEP closed things out scoring the final two points to take the match.
