Herd Volleyball Sweeps UAB, Advances to Conference USA Tournament
The Herd honored three players for senior day prior to match
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—The Marshall volleyball team swept visiting UAB Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-22), to earn the final spot in the Conference USA Volleyball Tournament beginning Friday, Nov. 17, in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Marshall finished the regular season 11-18 (6-8 C-USA), while UAB (11-19, 4-10 Conference USA) finished behind the Herd in the conference standings.
Trailing 10-8 in the first set, Marshall reeled off eight of nine points to take a 16-11 lead, a lead which the Herd would carry through the rest of the set. Marshall won the set 25-18 behind five kills from sophomore Madison Hill.
The Herd won a crucial second set. Marshall never trailed in the set and led by as much as five, but UAB consistently kept the set close. It was not until the team was up 20-19 when the Herd won five of the final seven points to take the set 25-21.
Marshall dominated the beginning of the final set, taking the first four points and seven of the first 10. The Blazers fought back, but the Herd never trailed in the set, and clinched the match following a kill from sophomore Jac’cara Walker. The Herd took the clinching set 25-22.
"The Herd played solid volleyball today," said Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs. "It's always great to advance into the Conference USA tournament."
