HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – The Marshall Volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 25-18, 25-18) to UAB on Sunday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center. The match was one of the final three contests left in the 2011 season.
Abby Tomas finished with a team-leading 21 kills during the match and only committed four attack errors, giving her a .436 (21K, 4E, 39TA) hitting percentage.
Dorothy Rahal added a career-high five service aces in the contest. Marshall finished with 11 service aces compared to UAB’s two.
Sammie Bane recorded her 12th double-double of the season after recording 50 assists and 13 digs.
The first set went back and forth early in the game, but UAB started to build a lead after taking advantage of five attack errors by Marshall and limiting the Marshall attack with 2.0 blocks. UAB’s Kirsten Gallagher earned two service aces at the end of the game to win it, 25-21.
Tomas led the team in the second set with six kills to push for a 25-16 win. Desirre Wilkerson also added three kills and had a .750 (3K, 0E, 4TA) hitting percentage in the game. The Herd had 14 kills as a team and used four service aces to tie the match up 1-1.
Despite Tomas repeating her six kill effort in the third set, UAB used a clean slate in the attack game to win 25-18.The Blazers were flawless at the net, recording a .581 team hitting percentage after finishing with 18 kills and zero errors off of 31 total attacks.
UAB claimed 3.0 (6 assists)blocks in the fourth set to take home the 25-18 win. The Blazers also forced the Herd to commit seven attack errors as a team during the set to win the match 3-1.
Marshall will be on the road for the last time this season on Wednesday as they face ECU. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. ET.
