Volleyball Sweeps Past ECU, 3-0|

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Marshall Volleyball team swept the East Carolina Pirates in the last road match of the 2011 season on Wednesday night. Cameron Yoho finished with 13 kills, while setter Sammie Bane recorded her 13th double-double of the season to help push for the 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) victory.
Marshall moved to 9-21 for the season and finished Conference USA play with a 8-12 record. East Carolina closed their season with the loss and fell to 2-27, 0-20 C-USA for the year.
Yoho’s 13 kill performance was the best on the team, while All C-USA selection, Abby Tomas, closely followed with 11. Yoho posted a .323 hitting percentage after only committing three attack errors off of 31 attempts.
Bane, who just this week was named to the All-C-USA Freshman team, finished with 37 assists and a team-high 23 digs, giving her a double-double for the contest.
“I was impressed with our floor defense, ball control and serving,” noted head coach Mitch Jacobs after the match. “Sammie had a wonderful match and kept us in great rhythm. Cameron and Desirre were certainly hooking up with Sammie great tonight.”
Desirre Wilkerson took over the show in the first set, helping the Herd win the game 25-19 after earning five kills and finishing with a .444 hitting percentage (5 kills, 1 error, 9 total attacks). The Herd defense limited East Carolina to only nine kills in the game.
The defense continued to control the tempo of the game in the second set after forcing the Pirates to a team attack percentage of .053 (9 kills, 7 errors, 38 total attacks). Yoho added six kills in the set and finished with a .556 hitting percentage after only taking one error during the game.
In the final set, Yoho and Laura Der closed out the match with four kills each, while Tomas had five to finish the game 25-22. The Herd had 2.0 ( 4 assists) blocks in the set and Bane was busy on the floor, acquiring 12 digs on defense.
Marshall will close out the season this Friday as they take on West Virginia for the final match of the 2011 season. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. ET. The competition will be offered through GameTracker live stats and free LiveStream video, via www.HerdZone.com
