HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Marshall volleyball team announced its 2017 regular season schedule on Monday. This season’s slate includes four tournaments, with 15 non-conference opponents and 14 Conference USA opponents.
Marshall opens its season with the Austin Peay Tourney in Clarksville, Tenn., on Aug. 25-26. The Thundering Herd begins the tournament with Missouri and Austin Peay on day one, while competing against UMKC on the final day.
The Herd takes a one-match break from tournament play on Aug. 29 to travel down I-64 to face off with longtime rival Morehead State.
The Thundering Herd’s second tournament of the year is the Spartan Invitational from Sept. 1-2 in East Lansing, Mich. Marshall takes on host Michigan State, San Diego State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. After the tournament, the Herd heads north to Athens, Ohio to take on the Ohio Bobcats on Sept. 5.
Marshall returns to Huntington after beginning the season on an eight-match road trip by hosting the Thunder Invite. The Thundering Herd opens the tournament against Virginia Tech on Sept. 8. The tournament continues on Sept. 9 as the Herd faces former Mid-American Conference foe Toledo and Maryland.
Marshall looks to retain the ‘Golden Ball’ as it welcomes in-state rival West Virginia to the Cam Henderson Center on Sept. 12. MU defeated WVU in a five-set thriller last year at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Herd competes in its final tournament of the season before Conference USA action begin on Sept. 15-16 at the Volunteer Invitational. Marshall competes against Tennessee, Furman and USC Upstate in Knoxville, Tenn.
In C-USA play, Marshall hosts Southern Miss (Sept. 29), Rice (Oct. 13), Louisiana Tech (Oct. 15), FIU (Oct. 20), North Texas (Nov. 3), Charlotte (Nov. 5) and UAB (Nov. 11) at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd visits Charlotte (Sept. 22), Middle Tennessee (Sept. 24), FIU (Oct. 6), UTSA (Oct. 8), WKU (Oct. 27), FAU (Oct. 29) and UTEP (Nov. 8).
The 2017 Conference USA Championship is hosted by WKU in Bowling Green, Ky., from Nov. 17-19.
Marshall hosts its third spring match on Tuesday, April 11 at 8 p.m. inside the Cam Henderson Center against the Ohio Bobcats. Admission to the event is free. The Herd hosts its final spring match on April 18 at 4 p.m. against the University of Charleston.
