CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Marshall University volleyball team wrapped up its spring season by going 2-1 in its final tournament host by Kent State at the Renaissance Volleyball Center in Cleveland.
The Thundering Herd defeated Kent State 2-0 (25-15, 25-18) and Bowling Green 2-0 (25-23, 25-19) before falling to Ohio State 2-0 (23-25, 18-25).
"We definitely played our best in our final tournament this past weekend," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We stayed mentally tough and were able to close out some games early."
Marshall came out swinging against Kent State in its opening match.
"We really dominated Kent State," Jacobs stated. "We had great ball control and the offense was really clicking."
The Herd then won a close contest with Bowling Green before Ohio State took a 2-0 decision from Marshall.
"We just ran out of gas against Ohio State," Jacobs explained. "I thought we outplayed the Buckeyes in the first set, but they had a girl who had a fantastic jump serve and they were able to get some points late.
"We got down in the second set, 7-1 and was able to battle back to get to within in two at 13-15, but they were able to pull away."
Marshall opens its 2009 season at the Hofstra Tournament beginning August 28-29 with a 4:30 p.m. ET match with Binghamton.
"We're looking forward to getting our freshmen to campus this summer," Jacobs added. "We're going to have to work hard and be ready to go in the fall and get the program back on track."
