HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Despite having completed her senior season during the 2013-14 athletic year, Marshall outside hitter Laura Der continues to be recognized as she was named one of 15 recipients of the 2014 Conference USA Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced Tuesday.

Conference USA annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.

Der, a two-time first team All-Conference USA selection, led the Herd to a 16-16 mark and a fourth-place league finish en route to a berth in the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament in her senior season. Der was also tabbed as an honorable mention selection on the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) All-South Region team.

This is the sixth year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.
