July 25, 2013
Strickland, who has bachelor's and masters' degrees (biology, science, chemistry minor) from Marshall, played Herd volleyball on Jacobs' team for two seasons, including the 2007 Conference USA regular-season champions. She has continued her connection with the MU head coach with the River Cities Volleyball club, for which Jacobs in the director.
"It's with great pride that Taylor has accepted assistant coaching position with us," Jacobs said. "To have someone grow up in our club, play at Marshall and also have an outstanding high school and club coaching resume right here in our backyard is special.
"I look forward to beginning the next chapter in Marshall volleyball, and I can't wait until Aug. 9, when we hit the court in preseason."
Strickland came to MU as a student-athlete after all-state success at Spring Valley High School in Huntington, where she was a four-year starter. She has been an assistant coach at the high school for five seasons, in which SVHS has won two state titles (2009 and 2011) and four regional titles.
With River Cities, Strickland coached the 13U team from 2010-12, then moved to the 18U head coach this year. Earlier this year, she coached the team to the USA junior National Championships in Dallas. The team finished 33rd in the National Division and 64th of 150 teams in the competition.
Strickland also has worked as a graduate assistant for the M Club from 2011-13.
"I am very excited to start my collegiate coaching career at not only my alma mater but the school I grew up around," Strickland said. "I can honestly say I bleed green and will represent this university proudly.
"I cannot thank Mitch enough for giving me this opportunity. Coaching at Marshall University has been a dream of mine for many years and I am looking forward to starting this season in August to build on a program that is already known for its success."
Jacobs also announced that Matt Jackson has joined the volleyball program as graduate assistant.
Jackson, a native of Pleasanton, Calif., played volleyball at Amador Valley High School, and then was captain of the men's club team at Oregon State University and student manager with the OSU women's intercollegiate team. He also coached the OSU men for one year. He is a 2012 Oregon State graduate.
The Thundering Herd opens the 2013 season Aug. 30 at Virginia's Jefferson Cup event in Charlottesville, Va., facing the host Cavaliers, then meeting Montana and James Madison the following day.
