HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team finishes its non-conference slate this weekend at the Rocky Top Classic hosted by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. The Thundering Herd will play Tennessee at 7 p.m. on Friday, while playing Furman at Noon and USC Upstate at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall looks to get back into the win column after suffering three-straight losses. The Herd opened up the Thunder Invite last week with a three-set sweep over Virginia Tech. Since then Marshall dropped matches against Toledo, Maryland and West Virginia.
Sophomore Jac’cara Walker continues to rank among the nation’s best. She ranks in the top 100 in the NCAA in aces per set (86th; 0.42), attacks per set (17th; 12.14), kills per set (34th; 4.22), points (42nd; 172.5), points per set (33rd; 4.79), service aces (70th; 15), total attacks (34th; 437) and total kills (46th; 152).
SCOUTING THE VOLUNTEERS
Tennessee enters the invitational with a 4-2 overall record. The Volunteers were scheduled to play against No. 20 Florida State, Florida A&M and Kennesaw State last week, but was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma. The Vols started off the season strong with four-straight wins, including victories over Western Michigan, Wofford, George Washington and UTSA. Tennessee later on dropped matches in straight sets to West Virginia and No. 2 Minnesota.
Senior outside hitter Kendra Turner leads Tennessee with 55 kills (2.75 k/s). Turner has recorded three matches with double-digit kills. Her season-high of 17 kills came against UTSA.
SCOUTING THE PALADINS
Furman holds a 5-5 overall record to begin the season. The Paladins have defeated Georgia Tech, Elon, Liberty, Tennessee State and Gardner-Webb. Furman has suffered losses against Michigan State, Auburn, Maryland, Hofstra and Alabama.
Junior outside hitter Jamila Johnson leads the attack with 157 kills (4.13 k/s), while senior outside hitter Christen Sikora follows with 115 kills (3.03 k/s).
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
USC Upstate (3-7) ended the Demon Deacon Invitational on a high note last Saturday with a five-set win over William & Mary. The Spartans have also defeated Gardner-Webb and N.C. Central.
Junior setter Madison Haake was honored by the ASUN Conference on Monday as the Volleyball Player of the Week. Haake finished the week with two triple-doubles and two double-doubles as Upstate faced Charlotte, Maryland Eastern Shore, Wake Forest and William & Mary. She combined for 109 assists, 53 digs and 36 kills.
