Volleyball Hits the Road for Two Conference Matches

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team hits the road for two Conference USA matches this weekend.  The Herd will first play at Tulsa, with the match slated for 8 p.m.  Following the match against the Golden Hurricane, MU heads to Dallas, Texas, to play the SMU Mustangs on Saturday at 8 p.m.

MU picked up three more victories last week by defeating WVU in the Battle of the Golden Ball, along with beating Southern Miss and UCF in conference play. The Herd now stands at the top of the C-USA standings with a perfect 3-0 record, while moving to 15-2 overall.


Emily Sullivan and Elizabeth Fleming have each produced extremely productive seasons in 2009.  Sullivan currently ranks second in C-USA in hitting percentage at .392, while Fleming is second in the conference in assists-per-set at 11.23.  As a team, the Herd is second in kills (14.18) and third in assists-per-set (12.77). 




Oct. 2 at Tulsa, 8 p.m.

Tulsa (10-5, 0-2 C-USA) dropped two conference matches last weekend at Tulane (0-3) and at UTEP (2-3). The Golden Hurricane offense has been extremely efficient, leading C-USA in hitting percentage as a team (.274), while ranking third in total kills/set (14.05). Hannah Stout tops the conference in attacking percentage at .426 (139K-23E-272TA), while Jennifer Eichler ranks sixth in that statistic.


Oct. 3 at SMU, 8 p.m.

SMU (10-6, 0-2 C-USA) also fell at both Tulane (0-3) and UTEP (2-3) to open its conference play. As a team, the Mustangs rank third in the conference in blocks/set, led by Kendra Kahanek who individually ranks second with1.08 blocks/set. Carly Bergquist is second in C-USA in service aces/set at 0.37.
