ATHENS, Ohio ? The Mid-American Conference-leading Ohio Bobcats won their 20th straight match to remain undefeated in league volleyball play by thumping the Marshall Thundering Herd in three games on Wednesday at the Convocation Center by scores of 30-20, 30-18, 30-16.
Ohio (22-3, 12-0 MAC) is now only one win or one Akron loss away from claiming its first MAC regular season crown. Marshall falls to 6-6 in the MAC and 16-13 overall.
The Bobcats' Laura Hageman and Lindsay Judice tied for the match high in kills with 13 each. Michaele Blackburn registered 17 digs.
Senior Tracey King (Miami, Fla.) will have to wait until the weekend to notch kill No. 1,000, as she entered Wednesday?s contest with 992 career kills but came away with only three kills versus Ohio. Sophomore Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) assisted on 18 Herd points while freshman Jen Harper (Columbus, Ohio) and Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio) led the Thundering Herd in kills with six each. Senior Ashley Barnard (Maumee, Ohio) tallied eight digs to give her 977 for her career.
The Bobcats, ranked No. 29 in the nation, have only dropped five games in their past 15 matches and swept the season series with Marshall for the third time in the past four years.
Marshall will try to rebound from Wednesday?s loss as it takes to the road for a crucial pair of matches at Eastern Michigan on Friday and Toledo on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. The Herd, currently in a third place tie with Kent State in the MAC East, is fighting for the right to host a first round match in the upcoming MAC Tournament. First round byes are awarded to the top three teams in the conference, while seeds 4-8 get the opportunity to host first round action.
