HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Senior outside hitter Laura Der (Clarksville Ind.) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team by CoSIDA on Thursday afternoon.
“Academics have always been a high priority for me,” Der said. “Marshal has a terrific student-athlete program that assists us with whatever we need. It’s an honor to represent my University both on the court and in the classroom.”
The senior co-captain is an advertising major with minors in sport management and Spanish. Der has compiled a 3.9 GPA while leading the Thundering Herd volleyball team on the court.
Der is joined by fellow district winners, Erin Fortner of U.S. Naval Academy, Elizabeth Gulick of West Virginia, Laura Reinhart of Saint Peter’s, Katie Slay of Penn State, and Jessi Greenburg of Kentucky.
“Everything Laura does, she gives it her all,” commented coach Mitch Jacobs. “The athletic achievements are one thing, but the academic achievements show more than just talent. They show a true determination to be excellent. Der makes a choice to be extraordinary and lives it every day.”
This is Der’s first academic achievement of the season after being named 2013 Preseason Conference USA First Team prior to the start of the year.
In 2012, she was named to the All-Conference USA First Team and C-USA All-Academic Team. She also earned a spot on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and received the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal.
On the court, Der leads the team with 265 kills this season, averaging 3.35 per set and has tallied 245 digs. Der reached the 1,100-career kill plateau in her match against Charlotte on Oct. 26. Her 1,141 kills rank sixth in program history.
