EL PASO, Texas – The Marshall volleyball team is on the road for the final time in the 2017 regular season with a visit out west against the UTEP Miners. First serve is set for Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m., eastern. The Thundering Herd closes out the regular season Saturday, Nov. 11 against UAB on senior day.
THE SERIES: 16 meetings, Marshall leads 10-6
Marshall and UTEP first met on the court in 1997 at the Missouri-Kansas City Invitational. The Miners took the first match in five sets. The teams did not meet again until 2005 when Marshall entered Conference USA. In 2005, the Herd swept the Miners in the regular season and then defeated UTEP again in five sets to advance to the Conference USA Championship that Marshall won over Houston. Marshall swept UTEP in the last meeting, Nov. 10, 2016. The Herd has not lost to the Miners since 2013.
Marshall is 10-17 overall and 5-7 in conference play. The Herd is coming off a dominating performance in a sweep over the Charlotte 49ers, Sunday Nov. 5. Marshall and Charlotte are currently tied for seventh place in the conference standings as both teams have two matches remaining in the regular season. The top eight teams advance to the Conference USA Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky.
In the win over the 49ers, Madison Hill led with 16 kills while Justice Craft, Jac’cara Walker and Katie Jacques added seven kills each. Madelyn Cole had 30 assists and two service aces and Kayla Simmons contributed three service aces. Jessa Long led the team in digs with 17.
Walker leads the Herd this season with 330 kills with Hill not far behind at 297. Walker is second in the conference is kills per set (3.93). Cole leads the squad with 893 assists, averaging 9.21 assists per set good for seventh in the league. Digs have been spread out this season as Marshall has four players all with over 200 as Long (320) leads, followed by Cole (240), Amber Weber (213) and Walker (211).
UTEP comes into its senior day match with a record of 5-21 and 2-11 in conference action. UTEP is tied with Louisiana Tech for 12th place. The match against Marshall is the final conference matchup of the season for the Miners. UTEP will have one remaining non-conference match at New Mexico on Nov. 12. UTEP is on a three-match losing skid and is coming off being swept by Florida Atlantic. The last win was a sweep at home against Middle Tennessee (Oct. 29).
UTEP has a team hitting percentage this season of .159 while opponents are hitting .244. Macey Austin leads the team with 330 kills and Cheyenne Jones is second with 179. Amanda King leads with 689 assists and Niki Cebak has 263 digs to lead the Miners.
