IRVING, TEXAS – Conference USA has announced its 2011 All-Conference first and second teams and all-freshman squad as well as specialty award winners for volleyball as selected by the league's 12 head coaches. Among the selections were Marshall’s Abby Tomas, who earned second team All-Conference honors and Sammie Bane, who earned an All-Freshman team selection.

Tomas, a junior outside hitter from Aledo, Texas, leads the team kills with 338 and has played in all 29 matches this season. She also leads the team in kills per set with a 3.16 average, placing her 13th in Conference USA standings. Tomas ranks first on the team in points with 371.5 and averages 3.47 points per set. For the year, she has collected 74 digs and 51 blocks. She is the only Marshall player this season to earn C-USA Player of the Week honors after being selected Offensive Player of the Week in early November.

"It's great to see Abby have the year she has had while playing with a herniated disc in her back," commented Head Coach Mitch Jacobs. "It will be great to get her healthy before her senior season."

Bane, a freshman setter from Brownstown, Indiana, was one of six freshman from around the league to be selected to the All-Freshman team. This season, Bane stepped into the shoes of primary setter and adapted to the role from the very beginning, earning a double-double in her first match against the No. 24 Michigan. Since then she has collected 11 other double-doubles. This past weekend, Bane eclipsed the 1,000 assist mark and currently has 1,087 assists and averages 10.16 per set. She also has 19 service aces, 259 digs and 23 blocks.

"Sammie has been an incredible shot of talent and leadership on the floor," added Jacobs. "She is the epitome of what your setter needs to be for a team to be successful. There are big things ahead for this team."

The awards are the first All-Conference honors for both players in their careers at Marshall University.
