Fifth straight win for Marshall
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Marshall University baseball team (6-3) overcame a three-run deficit with eight unanswered runs to win on the road against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels (3-5) on Tuesday. The Herd has won five straight games.
"It was a hard fought win after a long road trip to Florida," Marshall baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the win. "Our team has been tested with nine games in 10 days. So far they have responded with toughness and team work."
EKU got the scoring started with three runs on six hits in the bottom of the second, but Herd starting pitcher Chad Heiner limited the damage as he stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout to end the inning.
Heiner went three frames throwing scoreless innings in the first and third.
Marshall started to dig into the Colonel lead in the top of the fourth. Catcher Ryan Leitch reached base on an error with one out. Second baseman Christian Lucio then reached on a single to short and first baseman Daniel Carinci loaded the bases with a walk. Third baseman Travis Sankovich then reached base on a fielder's choice and scored Leitch. Right fielder Jordon Billups then singled through the left side on a 2-2 pitch to score Lucio and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Marshall tied the game in the top of the sixth. Lucio and Carinci led the inning off with a pair of singles. After a pair of Herd batters struck out, shortstop Geordon Blanton stepped to the plate with runners at the corners and two outs. He sent the first offering through the right side to knot the ballgame at 3-3 with a single.
MU did not wait long to take the lead as Carinci hit a sacrifice fly to center field allowing designated hitter Cole Williams to cross home and give the visitors a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh.
Marshall added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on a single by Williams that scored left fielder Kyle Schaefer and a Leitch fielder's choice that sent center fielder Luke Edwards home.
Edwards then stepped to the plate in the top of ninth with two outs as Billups stood at second and Blanton at first. He sent the second pitch of the at-bat to right center for a bases clearing double to give the Herd an 8-3 lead.
The coming wouldn't have been complete without the performance of the bullpen. Relievers Cole Agemy and Nicholas Weyrich combined to throw six scoreless innings, seeing the pair allow just two hits and three walks while striking out six Colonels to preserve the comeback by the Herd.
