Second Inning Dooms Herd in Game Two Loss at FIU

MIAMI – The Marshall University baseball team (11-8-1, 1-1 C-USA) fell in game two, 11-3, to the FIU Panthers (8-12, 1-1) in Miami on Saturday night.
The Herd put together a two-out rally in the top of the first inning. Cole Williams drew his first of four walks in the ballgame and Ryan Leitch followed with a single up the middle. Travis Sankovich then singled to left and a misplay by Roberto Sotolongo allowed Williams and Leitch to score making it 2-0 Marshall.
After a 1-2-3 inning from MU starting pitcher Patrick Copen in the bottom of the first, a two-out bases loaded walk to Williams scored Geordon Blanton to give the Herd a 3-0 lead.
FIU answered in the bottom of the second with eight runs, including a grand slam by Sotolongo, as Marshall trailed 8-3.
Reliever Zac Addkison threw a scoreless third inning. He struck out the side in fourth, but Rey Hernandez hit a homer in the frame to extend FIU's lead to 9-3.
The sophomore faced the minimum in the fifth and sixth innings striking out three across the two frames.
The Panthers added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Herd error.
Freshman relief pitcher Cam Rokisky tossed a scoreless eighth inning for Marshall.
UP NEXT
The Herd looks to take the series in the rubber game on Sunday against FIU. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
