BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Marshall University baseball team (19-21-1, 8-10 C-USA) completed a three-game sweep of the WKU Hilltoppers (13-26, 4-14 C-USA) with an 8-4 win in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on Sunday afternoon. It's the Herd's first road sweep since 2018 when it swept Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
"Another great start by Zac (Addkison) and our defense was great all weekend," Herd baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner said after completing the sweep of the Hilltoppers. "We worked hard on our situational offense and it showed all weekend. I'm proud of our guys. It was fun watching us play at a high level. This will be a great week to get healthy and carry our momentum into next weekend against a really good Charlotte team."
Travis Sankovich led off the game with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Christian Lucio ground out moved Sankovich to third. Then Luke Edwards grounded out to second, but Sankovich scored on the play to give Marshall a 1-0 lead.
A two-out rally ensued for the Herd as Ryan Leitch doubled to left center. Kyle Schaefer followed with a single to right to plate Leitch and make it 2-0. Jordon Billups doubled to left and an error by WKU catcher Hunter Evans allowed Leitch to score, giving the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
Andrew Delaney tied the game, 3-3, for the Hilltoppers in the bottom of the first with a three-run homer.
Marshall starting pitcher Zac Addkison settled in with a scoreless bottom of the second as he struck out a pair of Hilltoppers.
Leitch led off the third with a single through the left side and a one-out ground-rule double to right by Billups put runners at second and third with one out. Cole Williams helped the Herd regain the lead with a RBI-single to the pitcher scoring Leitch and moving Billups to third. Daniel Carinci then scored Billups when he reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. Geordon Blanton made it 6-3 Marshall with a single through the right side to score Carinci.
Edwards extended his on-base streak to 49 games with a base knock to begin the fourth. Three batters later, Billups brought him home with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3 MU.
In the top of the fifth, a two-out single by Sankovich to left scored Carinci and give the Herd an 8-3 advantage.
In the final four innings of Addkison's outing, he allowed just one base runner on a walk and struck out four WKU batters. The sophomore exited after 6.0 innings of work, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six.
Reliever Cole Agemy came on form the bullpen to begin the bottom of the seventh and threw a scoreless frame. Agemy gave up a run while recording the first two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Louis Davenport entered the game for Agemy and got a line out to end the eighth with the Herd leading 8-4.
Ryan Capuano pitched the ninth for Marshall. Although he gave up a one-out single, he kept WKU off the board to seal the ballgame and sweep for the visitors.
