Owls Take Game Two from Herd

Edwards hit his 13th homer of the season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (20-33-1, 9-20 C-USA) dropped its contest on Friday to the Florida Atlantic Owls (33-21, 18-11 C-USA), 14-12, at the Kennedy Center.

Herd starting pitcher Patrick Copen opened the contest with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the first. Travis Sankovich took the momentum in the bottom half of the inning as he led off with a double to left center. Two batters later Ryan Leitch recorded a two-out single, scoring Sankovich and moving to second on throw. Jordon Billups and Kyle Schaefer followed with RBI-doubles to right center to have Marshall on top 3-0 after the first.

After Copen hurled a scoreless top of the second, the Herd struck gold with two outs again in the bottom half of the frame. Sankovich and Daniel Carinci each collected two-out base knocks to right to have runners at first and second. Luke Edwards then stepped to the plate. The junior sent the first pitch of his at bat over the wall in right for his team-leading 13th homer of the season to put the home side up 6-0.

The Owls tallied four runs in the top of the third, including a leadoff homer by Jalen DeBose. However, after Kyle Schaefer drew a leadoff walk the in the bottom half of the inning, Geordon Blanton hit a homer to right to help Marshall maintain an 8-4 lead.

FAU struck for four runs in the in the top of the fourth to tie the game, 8-8, including homers by Shane Magrann and Dylan Goldstein.

Eddie Leon came on from the bullpen to start the fifth and set the Owls down in order by ending the inning with a strikeout. Christian Lucio put the Herd back on top after five, 9-8, with a sacrifice fly that scored Elijah Vogelsong.

After Leon tossed a scoreless top of the sixth, Schaefer launched a two-run dinger to right, scoring Jordon Billups, and extending the lead to 11-8. A Lucio RBI-single later in the inning saw Marshall lead 12-8 through six innings of play.

Louis Davenport came on in relief to start the seventh. He issued a pair of walks to start his outing, but struck out a pair of Owls to hold the visitors off the board.

FAU scored six runs off home runs by Gabriel Rincones, Jr., Goldstein and Jackson Ross to have MU trailing 14-12.

Carter Lyles threw a scoreless top of the ninth, but the Herd was unable to overcome the deficit in the final two innings of the ballgame.

Edwards has 83 hits this season, three away from breaking David Colangelo's program mark of 85 set in 2001.

UP NEXT
Marshall closes the season at 1 p.m. on Saturday for Senior Day. Billups, Blanton, Davenport and Jeffrey Purnell will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
